However, a new affiliate marketer does a huge mistake here. S/he becomes too focused on Google that s/he forgets about the real deal, the users.

For long-term bigger benefits, you sometimes have to sacrifices the instant benefits. For example, adding tons of ads or affiliate links on your website may give you some instant profits, but in the long term, you may not see the expected results.

Not caring about the competition is the mistake I had done and most beginners do. The success chances become slim when you as a new affiliate marketer try to compete with big brands.
The main traffic source for an affiliate site is Google. And, it’s super hard for a new affiliate website to outrank authoritative sites in the search results.
You need a solid strategy to get a considerable amount of traffic from Google. A few things you can do are:
- Always check the competition for a keyword on Google before targeting it. Learn keyword research so that you can determine the competition for a query on Google.
- Target keywords with low competition or competition that you can beat.
- Go for long queries with less search volume. Generally, long keywords have less search volume as well as low competition. Comparatively, it’s easier to rank for such terms. Moreover, they are highly targeted, which means you can get a higher affiliate marketing conversion rate for those keywords.
- Stick to a single niche until you get success with it. Publish content staying within a narrow industry. Be an authority in that niche and gradually expand your market.
- Focus on building topical authority by creating every type of content about a topic. Don’t just create product reviews.

5. Being Lazy or Impatient

It is never made for lazy ones. You’ll have to create a lot of content, do a lot of promotion, keep learning and implementing in the journey to become a professional affiliate marketer.
It takes 12 hours a day and 7 days a week for at least a year to start making enough money to cover your expenses provided that you’re working alone and not spending money. This seems a lot, but that’s how it works.

7. Not Building An Audience
The visitors you get from Google aren’t your audience. They know Google, not you. Google can stop sending you visitors anytime for a reason.
For an affiliate marketing business to be called successful, it needs to have its own audience. Such a site will still get traffic even if, say, Google penalized it for a month.
Below are a few ways to build your own audience.
- Making people subscribe to your affiliate site through email
- Allowing people to subscribe through the browser’s push notification service
- Making people follow you on social media such as YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
- Making people join social media or chat groups such as Facebook groups, Telegram groups, Whatsapp groups, etc.
- Creating a free tool that people want to use over and over again
The most reliable and beneficial way to build an audience is through email. Start collecting your website visitors’ emails with their consent.
You can try the following techniques to build an email list.
- Using comment forms. Most of the time, people comment on a blog post when they are interested in the topic and liked the content.
- Content upgrades. Let people get more content through email than what’s available on your affiliate site.
- Newsletter subscription form. If someone likes your content, they might be interested to subscribe your newsletter. You also need to encourage them to subscribe. That’s why you need to have a newsletter subscription form on your website that can be accessed easily.

8. Publishing Random Content
Publishing random content is another affiliate marketing mistake a lot of newbies do. You certainly don’t want to do that.
You need to have a content strategy for what type of content to publish and an editorial calendar for when to publish. You should at least have such a plan for the next six months.
It is important because you want to measure your performance and know where you are going. Creating content without any plan dilutes the core theme of your website. You have the danger of losing topical authority.
You need to be able to connect each of your blog posts and landing pages together through interlinking. Interlinking allows you to relate one page with another. You certainly don’t want to link any irrelevant page. That’s why all the content that you publish on your affiliate site needs to be related to each other.
Create an in-depth comprehensive blog post about a broad topic with high search demand in your niche. Then make individual blog posts for each of the sub-topics or sub-headings you discussed in that broad topic. Later relate all of them with one another through interlinking.

Which site do you think earns more? The obvious answer is Site B. The reason behind this is people follow the site they trust.
If you don’t focus on building trust with your audience you’re making a big mistake. Affiliate marketing is all about building an audience that trusts you and helping them through content and products.
Sometimes, people buy a product not because they trust the merchant but because you referred them to the product. They trust you more than the merchant.
So, it’s super important for an affiliate marketer to be able to decide which product to choose to promote. Choosing a wrong might make you some money but you’ll end up losing the most important thing- the trust of your audience.

10. No Implementation After Learning

As an affiliate marketer if you have a habit of consuming more content than creating, you should get rid of this habit as soon as possible. Content doesn’t refer to blog posts only, it also refers to videos, audio, and images.
