1. Ignoring Promotion

An affiliate marketing business struggles to grow without proper promotion. Not doing any kind of promotion is a huge mistake an affiliate marketer does.

Promotion is important for both a new affiliate site and an established one. It helps a new site to:

  • get more exposure,
  • raise brand awareness,
  • generate affiliate sales,
  • grow,
  • generate revenue,
  • get more customers,
  • get more traffic to the affiliate website.

Producing content in the hope that somebody would come automatically is a kind of foolishness. You’ve started affiliate marketing to make passive income for you. You can’t rely on something that may happen automatically. You rather want to make effective efforts to grow your business.

You don’t need to be too obsessed with promotion. If you are a new affiliate marketer, you should put 50% of your efforts on content creation and the rest 50% on promotion.

A few ways to promote an affiliate site are:

  • Using social media, niche forums, and O&A sites
  • Reaching out to influencers, potential customers, and individuals working in the same industry
  • Running ads
  • Using existing audiences such as social media followers, email subscribers, friends, and acquaintances.
  • Creating viral content

You should try out every method to promote your affiliate marketing business. But, focus only a few at a time. It’s hard to manage a lot of promotion campaigns at a time if you are working alone.

2. Being Search Engine Centric

Everyone knows how important a search engine is for affiliate marketing. A successful affiliate website gets the majority of its traffic from Google. This traffic is passive, consistent, and highly targeted. More traffic from Google means more revenue.

However, a new affiliate marketer does a huge mistake here. S/he becomes too focused on Google that s/he forgets about the real deal, the users.

Google also ranks content that’s helpful to the users and isn’t search engine-centric. That’s why focusing on the real users also helps you rank higher on Google.

This never means you should skip SEO. It simply means be user-centric rather than search engine-centric.

A few things that you can do to make your content more valuable and user-centric are:

  • Produce content that your audience like to consume
  • Don’t compromise user experience for search engines
  • Don’t deceive users by providing false information
  • First, optimize your site for users than for search engine
  • Make your content natural, don’t stuff keywords where it doesn’t make sense
  • Don’t be too obsessed with keyword density
  • Make decisions from the user’s perspective rather than search engine
  • Don’t make blog posts unnecessarily lengthy
  • Ask your audience for feedback and appreciate them for the feedback even if it’s negative

3. Having Short Term Mentality

For long-term bigger benefits, you sometimes have to sacrifices the instant benefits. For example, adding tons of ads or affiliate links on your website may give you some instant profits, but in the long term, you may not see the expected results.

Not having any long-term strategies is one of the biggest affiliate marketing mistakes newbies do. Below are a few things you should keep in mind

  • Never promote any harmful or unhelpful products regardless of how big the commission is. For some immediate money, you surely don’t want to destroy the path to long-term passive income.
  • Don’t redirect any links to unwanted or unexpected landing pages. Some of the beginners redirect links that seem helpful to affiliate landing pages that aren’t expected by users. You should never do this if you want to play long-term. The conversion rate from such redirection is next to zero, so it’s not worth it.
  • Don’t add too many unwanted ads, popups, affiliate links, and other distracting elements to your affiliate website. Make it clean.

It takes a long time to build something valuable that yields you income, so a lot of affiliate marketers choose disastrous shortcuts. Work patiently. Success is never built for impatient individuals.

4. Competing Without Any Strategy

Not caring about the competition is the mistake I had done and most beginners do. The success chances become slim when you as a new affiliate marketer try to compete with big brands.

The main traffic source for an affiliate site is Google. And, it’s super hard for a new affiliate website to outrank authoritative sites in the search results.

You need a solid strategy to get a considerable amount of traffic from Google. A few things you can do are:

  • Always check the competition for a keyword on Google before targeting it.  Learn keyword research so that you can determine the competition for a query on Google.
  • Target keywords with low competition or competition that you can beat.
  • Go for long queries with less search volume. Generally, long keywords have less search volume as well as low competition. Comparatively, it’s easier to rank for such terms. Moreover, they are highly targeted, which means you can get a higher affiliate marketing conversion rate for those keywords.
  • Stick to a single niche until you get success with it. Publish content staying within a narrow industry. Be an authority in that niche and gradually expand your market.
  • Focus on building topical authority by creating every type of content about a topic. Don’t just create product reviews.

5. Being Lazy or Impatient

You always have to pay a huge price for laziness. It’s what distinguishes a successful from a failure.

Affiliate marketing takes a long time and huge efforts to get you results. You need to be ready to do everything you can to grow your business. Success by chance is next to impossible in the case of affiliate marketing.

It is never made for lazy ones. You’ll have to create a lot of content, do a lot of promotion, keep learning and implementing in the journey to become a professional affiliate marketer.

It takes 12 hours a day and 7 days a week for at least a year to start making enough money to cover your expenses provided that you’re working alone and not spending money. This seems a lot, but that’s how it works.

You’re in great darkness if you expect your affiliate site to bring you money from the next day of starting.

What it takes to succeed in affiliate marketing:

  • Continuous learning
  • Continuous implementation of what you learn
  • Action taking
  • Whatever it takes mentality
  • Hard work
  • Patience
  • Consistency
  • Discipline
  • Affiliate marketing skills

Being lazy or impatient is the biggest reason why one fails. If you wait for the right mood, you’ll keep waiting for the rest of your life.

6. Doing What Others Are Doing

If you’re doing exactly the same as others, you’ll get lost in the crowd. If you’re doing what the big brands are doing, you’ll never be able to get out of the competition.

Never do the mistake of blindly following someone. If you’re doing the same as others, what’s the point of your existence? Always study your competitors and do something differently so that you can stand out.

People don’t want to read the same content over and over again. So, create something completely different from what’s already available. Moreover, why would Google show up your content on search results if something similar is already there?

You don’t need to find topics that no one has ever written anything about. Instead, you want to give a new point of view to what’s already there.

Furthermore, build new strategies, methods, and techniques of doing something. It will be harder but it’s worth it.

7. Not Building An Audience

The visitors you get from Google aren’t your audience. They know Google, not you. Google can stop sending you visitors anytime for a reason.

For an affiliate marketing business to be called successful, it needs to have its own audience. Such a site will still get traffic even if, say, Google penalized it for a month.

Below are a few ways to build your own audience.

  • Making people subscribe to your affiliate site through email
  • Allowing people to subscribe through the browser’s push notification service
  • Making people follow you on social media such as YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
  • Making people join social media or chat groups such as Facebook groups, Telegram groups, Whatsapp groups, etc.
  • Creating a free tool that people want to use over and over again

The most reliable and beneficial way to build an audience is through email. Start collecting your website visitors’ emails with their consent.

You can try the following techniques to build an email list.

  • Using comment forms. Most of the time, people comment on a blog post when they are interested in the topic and liked the content.
  • Content upgrades. Let people get more content through email than what’s available on your affiliate site.
  • Newsletter subscription form. If someone likes your content, they might be interested to subscribe your newsletter. You also need to encourage them to subscribe. That’s why you need to have a newsletter subscription form on your website that can be accessed easily.
  • Non-distracting popups
  • Freebies

8. Publishing Random Content

Publishing random content is another affiliate marketing mistake a lot of newbies do. You certainly don’t want to do that.

You need to have a content strategy for what type of content to publish and an editorial calendar for when to publish. You should at least have such a plan for the next six months.

It is important because you want to measure your performance and know where you are going. Creating content without any plan dilutes the core theme of your website. You have the danger of losing topical authority.

You need to be able to connect each of your blog posts and landing pages together through interlinking. Interlinking allows you to relate one page with another. You certainly don’t want to link any irrelevant page. That’s why all the content that you publish on your affiliate site needs to be related to each other.

Create an in-depth comprehensive blog post about a broad topic with high search demand in your niche. Then make individual blog posts for each of the sub-topics or sub-headings you discussed in that broad topic. Later relate all of them with one another through interlinking.

This increases your website’s topical authority and the chances to rank higher on Google for that topic. At the same time, you also generate more leads.

9. Not Focusing On Building Trust

Trust separates a highly profitable affiliate site from a failing site. Consider the following two affiliate sites:

  • Site A: Better Content with Low Trust
  • Site B: Average Content with High Trust

Which site do you think earns more? The obvious answer is Site B. The reason behind this is people follow the site they trust.

If you don’t focus on building trust with your audience you’re making a big mistake. Affiliate marketing is all about building an audience that trusts you and helping them through content and products.

Sometimes, people buy a product not because they trust the merchant but because you referred them to the product. They trust you more than the merchant.

So, it’s super important for an affiliate marketer to be able to decide which product to choose to promote. Choosing a wrong might make you some money but you’ll end up losing the most important thing- the trust of your audience.

If you keep making wrong decisions, you will never be able to grow and make the desired passive income.

Treat your audience as primary and profit as secondary while making any decisions for your affiliate marketing business.

10. No Implementation After Learning

Everyone knows learning is super important. However, learning alone isn’t worth a thing. The sole purpose of learning is to take the correct actions. And if you don’t take the action, you’re simply wasting your time.

As an affiliate marketer if you have a habit of consuming more content than creating, you should get rid of this habit as soon as possible. Content doesn’t refer to blog posts only, it also refers to videos, audio, and images.

Moreover, procrastination is also a bigger mistake a lot of people do. If you learn something today, take it into action today. Don’t procrastinate it for tomorrow.
