Content affects affiliate marketing conversion rate more than anything else.

A perfectly created content can pay you for years. In contrast, nobody wants to spend time on a site with crap content.

The success of an affiliate marketing site is mostly dependent on how well the blog posts are written.

This is a comprehensive guide for you to create highly converting affiliate marketing content. After reading this, you don’t have to search for another article about the same topic. I hope you enjoy it.

There are four phases involved in creating content for affiliate marketing. They are planning, promotion, writing, and publishing. Writing is only worth 25% of the effort. The other 75% goes on planning and optimizing for both affiliate marketing as well as a search engine. Each of the four is described below in detail.

#1 Planning the Content

A well-planned blog post is a hundred times better than something created on the fly. Planning is super important.

25% of your efforts should be on planning. 75% on the other three.

Planning is all about what you’re going to write and why. Let’s break down this broad topic into small subheadings.

Keyword Research

Keywords are the terms people search on search engines like Google.

Keyword research is important because it allows us to understand:

  • What users are interested in
  • Your chances to get traffic to the blog post
  • How well the traffic will convert
  • How much effort you’ll have to put in creating content

Without knowing these four aspects, it’s kind of stupid to write blog posts for your affiliate site.

To do keyword research you can use free tools like Keyword Planner and Google Trends.

Sign in to Google Ads and go to keyword planner.

Choose the find keywords section.

Enter broad terms such as “weight loss” (if you are in the health & fitness niche), or “computer repair” (when you’re in the computer & gadgets niche).

Brainstorm a few broad topics related to your niche and enter them.

To choose a keyword to write about, two things should be considered:

  1. Your ability to rank for the keyword on Google
  2. The business value of the keyword for your affiliate site

So, how will you find out if you can rank on Google for a key term?

To find it you need to analyze the top-ranking pages on the search result page of Google.

Search the keyword you are targeting on Google.

Find out the number of backlinks of each ranking page. For this purpose, you can use Ahrefs’ free backlink checker.

Generally, you want to target keywords for which ranking pages have fewer backlinks than you can create for your blog post.

Backlinks are not the only ranking factors, but, you can use them most of the time to decide which keywords to target for your affiliate marketing website. However, this doesn’t apply to every keyword.

The business value of a keyword can be found by looking at the CPC. Higher CPC means more people are bidding on that keyword.

Higher business value also makes the keyword harder to rank. Generally, keywords having words “buy”, “best”, “review” have higher business value. For example, if someone searches for “best headphones under $100”, he/she is trying to decide which one to purchase. It’s easy to sell a headphone to someone searching for this keyword than someone searching for “setup multiple headphones to a pc”.

Long-tail keywords are keywords with more than 4 words. These keywords convert better than broad terms even if they have a low search volume.

For example, “best mouse for a pc” converts better than “pc mouse”. Another benefit of targeting long-tail keywords is they are easier to rank on Google.

Content Research

Keyword research ends with having a topic to write about. Now, content research will help you to decide what to write.

The goal of content research is to find out what type of affiliate marketing content is performing better.

Search a keyword on Google and open each organic ranking page on a new tab.

Note down the following things about the web pages.

  • The type of landing page: is it blog post, product page, tool, etc.
  • Type of the content: list, how-to, tutorials, review, etc.
  • Headings included on each page and common headings
  • Comprehensiveness: depth/length of post (number of words)
  • Uniqueness: how unique each page is from others
  • Common characteristics of each page

After analyzing all the above factors, you have to create something similar but unique. Similar doesn’t mean the same.

If most of the landing pages are blog posts, create a blog post. If the majority of pages are list-based, create a list-based article. If a heading is common in most of the pages, include that heading in your post as well.

Remember the following tips:

  • Your blog post should support unique ideas.
  • Never copy content from top-ranking pages. Plagiarized content never ranks on Google.
  • Express your own knowledge, ideas, and opinion.
  • Provide examples and data to support your ideas
  • Use visuals such as images, infographics, videos, and audios in your blog post.
  • Make the blog posts more compressive than the top-ranking pages.

Making the blog post longer doesn’t mean filling it with irrelevant and invaluable content. Include more headings, ideas, examples, data, etc. that will help the users.

People also ask for and related searches

When you search some terms on Google, you may find the ‘people also ask for’ section. It includes some related questions that people search.

At the last of the Google search result page, there are related search terms.

Note down all the related questions and searches.

You want to answer those questions and include some relevant topics from related searches in your blog post.

This makes your content more valuable as a result it ranks better on Google as well as generates more affiliate sales.

You don’t need to answer every question and describe every topic. But don’t forget the topics that are relevant to your blog post and add value to users.

Meeting the expectations of users

You have to try to find out why someone searches a query on Google. It helps you to create better content that satisfies users. Content that successfully satisfies its consumers always generates more affiliate link visits.

So, the goal of understanding the expectations of users is to create content for affiliate marketing that converts more. This is possible when you give visitors what they were expecting from your web page.

A simple way to understand the user’s expectations is by analyzing the Google search result page for a query.

Simply search a key term you’re targeting on Google. Now, analyze the title of web pages ranking on top.

If most of them are product landing pages, it’s clear that the searcher wants to buy something.

If most of them are tutorials, it’s clear that the searcher wants to learn something.

It works on the belief that Google understands its users better than anyone else. This might not be true for every keyword. Sometimes, Google shows a variety of web pages such as some of them are product pages, some are blog posts while others are tools.

In such a case you have to use your common sense. Ask yourself, why a person would search the term?

Content Gap

Give yourself time to read/check the top-ranking web pages on Google for the key term you’re targeting.

Note down the topics, and ideas they haven’t included in their blog post. Think about the topics that can help users but aren’t discussed in the top-ranking web pages.

You should include at least a few headings in your blog posts that are unique. This helps your blog to stand out. Describing the same thing that’s already there is a waste of time. It’s not going to work.

It’s even important to find content gaps if your affiliate marketing site is new.

#2 Affiliate Product Promotion

Having a solid affiliate marketing strategy is the second phase of creating content for affiliate marketing.

Which products are you going to promote in your blog post? How you’re going to promote them? What are the chances of someone making a purchase?

You must answer various similar questions before starting to write the content.

Unlike monetizing through ads, affiliate marketing needs solid planning with highly valuable content that sells itself. Nobody visits any affiliate link that’s placed where it shouldn’t be.

You may have the best content out there, but if it’s not optimized for affiliate marketing, you aren’t going to make as much money as you should.

If I have to choose between great content that nobody has ever written and a solid affiliate marketing strategy, I’d go with the latter one.

After all, the goal is to generate profits and grow the business in the long run.

This doesn’t mean quality content doesn’t have a place. It’s a must. My point is how you promote products affects how much you earn. This topic is surely worth your time.

Note down the products you can promote

After moving through the planning phase of writing content for affiliate marketing, you probably already have an idea about how your blog post is going to be.

You should now decide which products fit your blog post. You can also check other posts on a similar topic to get an idea of what products you can promote on your blog.

You can check which products they are promoting and how.

Here you just have to make a list of products that you can promote on your blog. Also, get the affiliate links for each product.

Tap vs Fibrous Methods for Affiliate Marketing

There are two methods of promoting affiliate products in a blog post. They are Tap and Fibrous methods.

Tap Method for Affiliate Product Promotion involves primary and secondary products.

A Primary Product is a single product that is the main focus of the blog post. You talk more and in detail about the primary product.

While Secondary Products are such products that you mention less often within a blog post. You just replace external links with affiliate links when available. They are not the main focus of your blog post.

Suppose you’re writing an affiliate post about “the best web hosting providers”. You’re going to talk about 10 web hosting providers. You may also want to discuss some domain registrars, web designers, etc. in the post. For each of the offerings you mention, you use affiliate links.

Tap Method for Affiliate Marketing suggests that you should have a primary product. In our case, the primary product will be one of the web hosting providers. All of the other products will be secondary.

You’ll go into detail about the primary product. Also, you’ll state the benefits of the product giving enough reason to buy it.

On the other hand, the Fibrous Method for affiliate product promotion treats all the products equally, which means, you won’t be biased for a single product. You won’t focus on any particular product but include affiliate links for every product. The users will decide themselves which product is best for them.

In the above example, if you choose the fibrous method, you will treat all 10 web hosting providers equally giving enough reason to buy for every product. The users will choose what suits them best.

Give the visitors enough reason to buy

While writing an article for affiliate marketing, you should ask yourself what’s in it that someone would buy after reading it.

It’s very important to think about. The web is full of content. Users have a lot of options to choose from.

If you can’t convince a user to buy, there’s always someone who can.

Read the article you have written and find the reasons why someone would buy using your affiliate links.

#3 Writing the Content

In this section let’s see how you can write your article for affiliate marketing.

Outline the Headings

Search your targeted keyword on Google. Visit the top-ranking web pages and read all of them.

What are the topics they have covered? What are the common and different topics among all the web pages?

If there’s something that most of the web pages describe, you also want to discuss that in your blog post as well. This ensures that you don’t miss any important topic.

But that’s never enough. In addition, you have to include more sub-topics that contain your own ideas, knowledge, and research.

Before start writing, outline all the headings and sub-headings you’re going to cover in your blog post. This will help you to make a comprehensive article.

Think every heading as an individual post

Most people run out of ideas while writing the content. But there is a way to tackle this problem.

Treat every heading in your article as an individual blog post. What would you write if you have to create an article about that heading?

Do your research accordingly. Make sub-headings and describe each topic. You don’t need to create a lengthy article about each heading, instead, write concisely.

Later you can join all the headings together to form a single high-quality comprehensive article. You can manipulate the content here and there to get a flow.

Examples and Data

Obviously, you’ll include your own ideas, methods, opinions, and knowledge in your articles written for affiliate marketing. To support all of your creations, you want to use examples and data.

Using examples also enhances the user experience. Adding data increases the chances of getting backlinks.

It has a lot of benefits with no drawbacks. It only takes some time to research, but it’s worth it. After all, your articles are supposed to generate you a consistent passive income in the future.

#4 Publishing the content

Yes, publishing is like hitting that publish button on WordPress post editor. But, within this section, I like to discuss a few important things that are indispensable while writing affiliate marketing content.

It’s not necessary to say that you must check Grammar & spellings before publishing any article on your website. That’s the basic everyone should do.

A few things that are responsible to get traffic to your article are On-Page SEO, Title & meta-description, and visual elements.

On-Page SEO helps your blog post rank on Google for the keyword you’re targeting.

Take care of the following things:

  • Use alt tags for all images in your blog
  • Mention keyword a few times in your article where it sounds best. Don’t overdo it.
  • Use keyword in URL, title and meta-description
  • Make in-depth articles
  • Use visual elements such as images and videos
  • Limit ads, popups, and any other distracting elements in your blog post
  • Make paragraphs shorts. Ideally less than 4 lines.
  • Don’t use complex sentences
  • Use small words
  • Use bullet points, headings, and sub-headings to make the article skimmable
  • Use larger & simple font
  • Don’t use too many colors
  • Think again about the sidebar. Is it worth it? As an affiliate site, do you really need it?

The title is one of the most important parts of a blog post. It is what users see on a search engine, social media, and everywhere your article is shared.

Make titles super attention grabber. Use keywords in your title for SEO purposes. A bad title and a blog post lose more than 60% of the traffic. Use the titles of top-ranking pages on Google to get a general title idea, but don’t copy.

Similarly, meta-description is seen on search engine result pages. A better meta-description helps to get more traffic.

Use keywords in meta-description. Tell what visitors can expect to read in your blog post.

Moreover, visual elements such as images, videos, charts, gifs increase user experience. They help users to better understand your article.

These days nobody reads a long article without any visuals. At the same time, you’ll also never find any articles without any images on Google for keywords with business value.
